Is it time for your pump’s scheduled maintenance? Do you have the right parts ready? The key to staying on top of this is having an up-to-date Bill of Materials, or BOM. Hear some tips from Mollie Timmerman on keeping your BOM up-to-date and your operation running smoothly!

What is a BOM and Why it Matters

A BOM, or Bill of Materials, lists all of the components of your pump including quantities, materials, and detailed drawings. It's crucial that these BOMs are always current and reflect any changes made to the pump.

Having an accurate BOM is critical for minimizing downtime and ensuring you have the right spare parts when you need them. It allows you to order the correct parts and plan maintenance effectively.

Operational Benefits and Risks of Inaccuracy

This also helps you make safe and reliable decisions for both production and maintenance. Using up-to-date BOMs ensures your parts are standardized which improves inventory management and forecasting. It also means that when you place an order you can be confident that you're getting the right part in both form and function. If your BOM isn't accurate it can throw off your forecasts. This could lead to having too many or too few parts on hand causing disruptions in your maintenance schedule and unplanned downtime.

Tips for Effective BOM Management

Also, if you move pumps to a different location or job site make sure your BOM is updated with tag reassignments. This ensures everything stays aligned with what's actually installed preventing costly mistakes.

And lastly, consider the Gemba method. In lean manufacturing it emphasizes going to the front lines to spot problems. It's a great way to catch any discrepancies between what's in your historical files and what's actually on site.

In the end, keeping your BOM current is essential for efficient maintenance and reducing downtime. Stay on top of it and you'll ensure your pumps keep running smoothly.
